What’s new in hearing aids?

I haven’t written for a while.  I have been to the American Academy of Audiology conference in Boston, to catch up with what’s current in the hearing aid industry.  I thought the most interesting activity was in the earmold area.  At the end of the day, hearing aid “plumbing” is still really important.  It should be comfortable, and complement the hearing aid in the acoustic goals.  If the earpiece, customised or otherwise, isn’t comfortable, you are not going to wear the hearing aid.

For milder losses, open fit is the way to go, in my opinion.   Our hearing aids have a state of the art feedback management system, so we can work with quite a wide range of hearing loss.  I’m also coming to the view that amplifying low frequencies is needed a lot less than we used to think.  It’s a real case of more is not always best.
