I am at an audiology seminar in Melbourne, hearing from a young woman who has cochlear implants. She tells her story well, but one sentence she used applies to everyone with limited access to sound. She has a very strong commitment to getting the best hearing she can and she said
“You can’t have someone else doing your hearing for you” said Samantha
She practices persistently and deserves to do well.
She deliberately, and systematically listened to sounds in the house to work out what they were, and to train herself to recognition. I have only a mild hearing loss. It’s hard for me to be convincing on this topic, but Samantha convinced me that it is possible to listen, learn and enjoy new sounds.
I wish all our clients understood this. Most do, but we get some people who just haven’t understood that they have to make the commitment to learn the sounds they hear.
Let me say it again
“You can’t have someone else doing your hearing for you” Thanks Samantha, for a great presentation, and for sharing your success and your journey.
