A new study out of the British Medical Journal reveals high caffeine consumption ‘may’ help lower your risk of everything from certain cancers to heart disease. But the evidence is out when it comes to people prone to tinnitus, the high pitched drone that only you can hear.
A study published in the American Journal of Medicine tracked 65000 women over the course of 18 years and found that women who drank 5 cups of coffee a day were 15% less likely to develop tinnitus. And a study from Bristol University warns that acute caffeine withdrawal may make tinnitus worse.
This conflicts with anecdotal evidence from people on various hearing forums who report that quitting caffeine relieved their tinnitus.
To compound things further, a Korean study published in 2016 showed that high caffeine intake worsened symptoms of depression and anxiety, which often coexist with tinnitus.
As with anything, individual results will vary.
Have you quit caffeine and found an increase or decrease in tinnitus intensity? I’d love to hear your experiences.
