I gave a talk today to Melbourne Rotary. I’m very pleased to be a member of Rotary. It’s a most amazing service organisation, that delivers on a low administration footprint, and which is changing with the times.
I like giving talks – I always get such good questions.
I shared part of my personal story with the audience, and now share it more broadly with you: My father had a rapidly progressive hearing loss, which was hard for him professionally, and hard for his family. He was very determined to overcome it, and used hearing aids well, even though he lost his hearing before the days of good technology. He became Founder and Chairman of the Friends of the Royal Victorian School for the Deaf, in Derby, England, and with his encouragement, whilst I was still a teenager, I became a volunteer there. This was an experience that was to shape my future, and laid the foundations to a lifetime commitment to reducing the burden of hearing loss, and of the importance of service. He became the Founder and Chairman of the Friends of the Victorian School for the Deaf in Derby, in England, and, inevitably, I became a volunteer. My introduction to service started in Derby, when I was about 14.
That experience set me on a path where a bunch of degrees, and the experience of working with some amazing leaders in the field of hearing, on three different continents, brings me to today, where I give talks on hearing, and my company supplies hearing aids based on bionic ear technology, that can be easily set up by the user, and that cost a fraction of the price of other premium quality hearing aids.
Today, we focused mostly on reasons for getting hearing aids, and on listening. I touched on “wife deafness” (or is it “husband deafness”?). I guess it depends on circumstances, but of course it exists.
I thought I’d share two of my points: one, If you need hearing aids, get good quality hearing aids, and make a commitment to learning how to hear and listen again.
Hearing aids don’t make you look old; not wearing hearing aids probably does.
