I am still met with surprise when I tell them that hearing is a “use it or lose it” sense. I struggle to see why people would be surprised. We understand that in other parts of our bodies, if muscles or nerves aren’t used, they atrophy. As our high frequency cochlear function deteriorates, then so do the associated nerves, and the pattern representation in the brain becomes disturbed. People who do nothing about that may turn up in hearing aid clinics years later, and really struggle with hearing aids. Naturally, I think hearing aids are a good thing. I’ve spent most of my life trying to make them better, and more acceptable.
When my Dad lost his hearing, he had to fight to get recognition and get a hearing aid. Now that they are easily available, then people are generally not using them as soon as they should. Keep young. Get hearing aids as soon as you notice difficulties.
Ah…. the price. Well, we are doing our best on that too, and have at least managed to pretty much halve the cost of a premium product. Visit us at Blamey Saunders hears.
